Classical buildings as widely spaced in time as a Roman temple, an Italian Renaissance palace and a Regency house all show an awareness of these rules even if they vary them, break them or poetically contradict them. Sir Christopher Wren described them as the “Latin” of architecture and the analogy is almost exact.

Would have been a 5-star review had it not been for the authors dismissal of the Greek Revival in Architecture, which was only allowed a couple of pages, and also happens to be my favourite of the styles! In this book, the author’s purpose is to set out as simply and vividly as possible the exact grammatical workings of this architectural language. Summerson had a great gift for explaining difficult things in plain English.

In doing so he places the Renaissance architects who we know jonh well — Alberti, Brunelleschi, Bramante, and Palladio, to sumerson a few summerrson in the context of this classical grammar, and demonstrates how they evolved it.

A true masterpiece about classical architecture that spans antiquity to 19th century European and American architecture. Pages with related products. The book seems to skim over the surface of the matter, but st Summerson’s six radio lectures about architecture is a short read, very easy to follow. Amazon Business Service for business customers. Also, probably since these lectures were broadcasted by the BBC, there is a lot of emphasis on British architects and buildings.

This book should be on every architect’s bookshelf – not just for the knowledge it imparts of the columns, capitols and pediments but for the lessons in proportion, rhythm and pattern as well as quite simply the pleasure of reading Summerson’s writing.
