Knowing that their insignificant characters are sure to be “written out” fairly soon, Dahl and the others must find a way into the universe where the show is actually produced, to convince the writers and producer to spare their lives. For me the whole thing worked really well.
And there was that thing about owing people handjobs, blowjobs, and well, err, fucks. The novel satirises the tropes of redshirt and black box in television science fiction writing. Second act, really pretty competant, but not satisfying, if only because it is here that you see everything that is going to happen in the last third of the book and jkhn that’s going to resolve, and that is the weakest section of the entire thing including the last three stories.
This is not my favorite book by John Scalzi. I’ve read books by Scalzi that are great so I had hope for this and after the “great reviews” I was looking forward to it. You get about a third of the way through the book and the book’s outlook, direction and premise change.
