Nonetheless the story is pretty strong and what I especially liked was the vividness of the prose. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Conn novel tells of the harsh realities of life in Ancient Romenot only for the nobilitas but also for the slave population, who revolt and kill Gaius’s father during a siege of the Caesar estate.
It really is a terrific read. I found his performance to be average here, and it’s hard to tell if that’s due to the material or not.

The proof of that is there in all the positive ratings on Goodreads and Amazon and in the book deals and bank accounts of the author. Some of the characters have rather odd names for Romans and the character of Cabera, a nomadic healer, seems to come from a work of fantasy.
